In their most recent Science Club meeting, the 4th-graders of Harrison Park Elementary School learned about electric circuits as they discovered how to set their houses aglow.
Mrs. Jasiewicz, a student learning assistant, read and discussed the book Who Was Thomas Alva Edison? with the students every Monday during their lunch period for six weeks. Each week, the students learned about significant inventions of our time like morse code, the phonograph, record players, and electric circuits. Then, in an afterschool activity, Jasiewicz was joined by Student Learning Assistant Alicia Wilson and PCA Krista Matthews to complete a hands-on activity about the flow of electricity. With the help of a Science grant and Donors Choose, students were supplied circuit materials like wires, light bulbs, bulb holders, battery holders, and cardboard boxes to use for this activity. Students found a variety of ways to run an electric current to their cardboard houses and add light fixtures to their dwellings while dabbling with interior decorating as well.
“The students enjoyed solving the challenges of closed and overloaded circuits,” said Mrs. Jasiewicz. “They definitely rose to the occasion, and I love the final products!”
