To transition her students at Harrison Park Elementary School from summer to the new school year, Miss Simpson had her fifth-grade class read “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” by Mark Teague. Next, they were given a writing assignment with two options: tell a true story of how they spent their summer, or try to trick classmates and make up a false story.
The students then paired up with partners and guessed whether the stories were true or false. “My fifth graders loved sharing with the class as they revealed whether the stories were true or false,” commented Miss Simpson.
